Why we started
Try buying a backpack online. You get adjectives and a photograph of someone on a mountain. What you almost never get is the capacity in litres, the empty weight in pounds and the largest laptop that genuinely fits. Those three numbers decide whether the bag works for you, so we put all three on every product page.
The thing nobody tells you
Most people buy a bag two sizes too big. A 30 L pack with a laptop and a sandwich in it sags, swings and feels heavier than a 20 L pack packed full. Bigger is not more useful, it is just bigger. Our size calculator exists to talk people down rather than up.
What we build around
- YKK zips on everything above $40, because a cheap zip is the first thing to fail.
- Bar tacked stitching at the strap anchors, which is the joint that carries the whole load.
- Coated or doubled base panels, because the bottom wears through before anything else.
- Suspended laptop sleeves, so stepping off a kerb does not go straight into your screen.
- Replaceable buckles and clips, stocked and posted free for the life of the bag.
The honest trade off
These are coated nylon and polyester bags, and full grain leather at the top of the range. They are not made in the United States, and we do not pretend otherwise. What we do is specify the parts that fail, publish the numbers, and stock the spares.
